The Arkansas Grand Canyon is a tourism name for the broad valley view from Highway 7 south of Jasper in Newton County, not an official USGS geographic name 1,2,3,4,5. According to Bill Bowden's February 3, 2020 Arkansas Democrat-Gazette account, Jane and Chris McNutt promoted the new name for what had been called Vendor Valley to attract visitors to their inn 6,7. That account places the change in the early 1970s, but the inn's published ownership history points instead to about 1968 to 1969 6,8. The exact year and the person who first coined the name remain unresolved 6,8.

Vendor Valley, Big Creek Valley and the newer names

Arkansas Tourism uses “Arkansas Grand Canyon,” “Arkansas' Grand Canyon” and “Grand Canyon of the Ozarks” in different publications 2,9,10,11. The apostrophe and the longer Ozarks form are variations in tourism usage, not names for three separate features along this stretch of highway 2,9,10,11. ARDOT used “Arkansas' Grand Canyon” for a Highway 7 stop in its October 2026 Explore AR Highways campaign 12,13.

The older name Vendor Valley appears in Bowden's account of the McNutts' promotion 6,7. Vendor is a community east of the best-known viewpoint, about 4.8 miles away in a straight line, across the western Big Creek drainage 1,14,15. A 2024 RoadRUNNER motorcycle-travel article also gives Vendor Valley and Big Creek Valley as older names 16. Its account supplies no source for the naming story and may repeat the earlier newspaper report 16.

The settlement history of Vendor provides the community background to the older valley name 6,17,18. The Big Creek drainage supplies the geographical context: Dry Branch flows into the Left Fork of Big Creek, which joins Big Creek before the water reaches the Buffalo River near Carver 14,19,20. The Buffalo River's main channel is not the watercourse directly below the inn, despite that description appearing in travel accounts 14,19,20.

Is the Arkansas Grand Canyon an official geographic name?

None of the three tourism forms appears in the USGS Arkansas or national place-name files updated November 2, 2026 3,4,5. Vendor Valley and Big Creek Valley are also absent from those files 3,4,5. The names are useful descriptions in local history and travel writing, but they are not official USGS entries 3,4,5,6,16.

Government use in a visitor campaign does not amount to an official geographic naming decision 3,4,5,12,13. Arkansas Tourism and ARDOT can use a familiar tourism name while the same wording remains absent from the national place-name records 2,3,4,5,9,12.

The Arkansas Grand Canyon is also not a single surveyed overlook with a formally defined canyon boundary 1,2,12,13,21,22,23. The name describes a stretch of roadside valley views, with separate locations including the Cliff House, Scenic Point and the point linked by ARDOT 1,2,12,13. Published coordinates for one viewpoint should therefore not be treated as the location of every stop carrying the canyon name 1,12,13.

What the McNutt promotion story actually says

Bowden's 2020 article attributes the renaming of Vendor Valley to Jane and Chris McNutt in the early 1970s, describing it as a way to draw tourists to their Cliff House Inn on Highway 7 6,7. This is the best available account of who promoted the name, but it is a retrospective newspaper account rather than a dated record of the first use 6,7.

The distinction between promoting a name and founding the inn matters 6,8. According to the inn's own published history, Kenneth and Fern Carter opened it in 1967 8. The McNutts were later operators, not the founders credited by that history 8. Calling them the founders would combine two different chapters of the business's past 8.

RoadRUNNER repeated the 1970s promotional account in 2024, along with the Vendor Valley and Big Creek Valley names 16. Because the article cites no source for that account, its repetition cannot establish that the story rests on a second, independent historical record 16. The newspaper attribution remains an attribution, not a confirmed naming event with an agreed date 6,8,16.

Why the dates do not agree

According to the Cliff House's published history, the Carters sold to the McNutts about a year after the 1967 opening, and the McNutts sold about a year later 8. That sequence places their ownership around 1968 to 1969 rather than in the early 1970s 8. Bowden's account assigns the promotional renaming to the early 1970s 6,7.

Both accounts were written retrospectively, and the discrepancy has not been resolved by a dated deed, advertisement, postcard or photograph of the first sign 6,8. The available evidence does not justify choosing one precise year or presenting the coinage as conclusively established 6,8.

What dated uses of the name are documented?

The earliest professionally published use identified and dated in the available evidence is Budget Travel's January 5, 2006 article “Road Trip: The Arkansas Ozarks,” which calls the Highway 7 views south of Jasper the “Grand Canyon of the Ozarks” 24. That is a documented use, not proof that the phrase originated in 2006 6,8,24.

A May 20, 2009 personal blog post titled “They Call It the Arkansas Grand Canyon” documents the non-possessive form 25. Older brochures and postcards carrying the name appear on resale sites, but their dates have not been verified 26. Undated material cannot settle the earlier ownership conflict or establish an exact first-use year 6,8,26.

The missing evidence is specific: a reliably dated early advertisement, postcard, deed or first-sign photograph could help resolve the naming chronology 6,8,26. Until such evidence is established, the early promotional story and the later dated published uses should remain distinct 6,8,24,25.

Other places called a Little Grand Canyon

Grand Gulf State Park near Thayer, Missouri, is promoted as Missouri's “Little Grand Canyon” 27. The Little Grand Canyon at White Oak Lake in south Arkansas is another, entirely different formation 28,29. Neither is the valley view beside Highway 7 south of Jasper in Newton County 1,2,27,28,29.

For this landscape, pairing the Arkansas Grand Canyon name with Highway 7, Jasper and Newton County separates the roadside destination from those similarly named places 1,2,27,28,29. Its geology explains the local erosional valley independently of the comparisons suggested by the tourism nickname 30,31,32,33.
