Off-roading near the Arkansas Grand Canyon includes private retreats, rental businesses and designated National Forest routes, each with different vehicle rules 1,2,3,4,5. J3 at the Gap offers cabins with UTVs and day visits on private property along Scenic Highway 7 south of Jasper 1,6,7. Public-road access is a separate question: Arkansas Act 922 allows local road designations for qualifying UTVs, not unrestricted statewide riding or access for ordinary ATVs 8,9.

J3 at the Gap on Highway 7

J3 at the Gap publishes its address as 9494 Highway 7 South, Jasper, AR 72641; it is a private retreat, not a public trailhead 1,10,11. A local tourism spotlight describes it as 9.3 miles south of the Newton County Courthouse, but that mileage has not been independently verified 12. Its exact driving distance from the Cliff House viewpoint is therefore not established 12.

J3 describes hundreds of private acres, but its own numbers differ: the About page says 350 acres and a website article says 300 acres 13,14. The advertised amenities include private side-by-side trails, hiking, a sauna, hot tubs and gathering spaces called the Henhouse and the Treehouse 15,16. Weddings and group retreats are offered, with target shooting, catering and guided horseback rides by appointment 15,16. A pool was described as “coming soon,” not as an available facility, when checked November 3, 2026 15.

Cabins with included side-by-side UTVs

The following base nightly prices and vehicle inclusions were checked November 3, 2026; they are published starting prices, not guaranteed booking totals 6,17.

Cabin Published base price per night Included UTVs
Mimi's Mother Pearl $3,500 Two side-by-side UTVs 6
Shop Creek Livery $850 One side-by-side UTV 6
Karolina Rose $650 One side-by-side UTV 6
The Outpost $550 One side-by-side UTV 6
Squatters Cabin $300 One side-by-side UTV 6

Tent and overland camping are also offered, and a full-property buyout includes all cabins, UTVs and common spaces, checked November 3, 2026 6,17. Compare these packages with the other cabins and campgrounds in the lodging directory.

Day passes and rental prices

J3's day-pass page lists admission at $25 per person from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., checked November 3, 2026 7. Every party must rent at least one Can-Am UTV, with additional rentals required if the group exceeds the available seating 7. The pass is therefore not simply a bring-your-own-vehicle admission ticket 7.

Published rental figures are not entirely consistent: the day-pass information lists full-day rentals at $250 for a two-door and $400 for a four-door, while another page lists $200 for four hours and $400 for eight hours, checked November 3, 2026 7,15. Ask which vehicle and rental period a quoted price covers, and request the complete party cost before booking.

Can guests bring their own ATV or UTV?

J3's published statements conflict 14,15,18. Its amenities page says personal ATVs are not allowed for insurance reasons, while a blog article invites guests to bring their own ride 14,15. The Fire on the Mountain event page says no side-by-sides are allowed on the property while also offering cabins with included Can-Ams 18. These statements do not establish a dependable general bring-your-own policy 14,15,18.

The published contact is 870-849-7504 or Hello@J3AtTheGap.com, with a booking-request page available online 19.

Fire on the Mountain and other events

J3 hosted the Ozark Mountain Overland Invasion on May 15 to 17, 2026 20. Fire on the Mountain was scheduled for November 6 to 8, 2026, with off-grid camping, backroad exploring and a catered Saturday dinner, checked November 3, 2026 18. These are J3 events, separate from the Jasper Jeep Jam and Overlanding Rally 18,20,21,22. Confirm event-specific vehicle restrictions as well as the retreat's ordinary guest rules.

Other private riding and overlanding options

The wider scene includes both bring-your-own parks and vehicle rentals, rather than a single connected trail system 2,3,23,24. Business offerings and event status below were checked November 3, 2026 2,3,21,24,25.

Operator or event Location and offering Important distinction
Jasper Jeep Jam and Overlanding Rally Held March 12 to 15, 2026, at Newton County Fairgrounds, 1333 South Highway 7, Jasper All makes of highway-legal overland vehicles welcome; four-wheelers and side-by-sides prohibited; no 2027 dates announced 21,22,26
Wilderness Rider Buffalo Ranch Private Boxley-area park advertising more than 4,000 acres, six-seat rentals and guided tours Allows guests' ATVs, Jeeps and side-by-sides; approach from Highway 21, not the Kingston mailing address 2,23
Buffalo River Off-Road Rentals 8175 Highway 43, Compton; four- to eight-hour self-guided Polaris RZR rentals for 2026 Guided tours on request; off-road driving is not allowed inside Buffalo National River 3,24
Mack's Pines 22816 State Route 7 North, Dover; cabins, RV and tent camping, café, store and day-rider parking Farther south; UTV rentals do not appear in its published offerings 25

For a private-trail lodging option, Bearly Earth Retreat is a single whole-property rental between Jasper and Pelsor near Highway 7, with four bedrooms and space for ten guests 27. Its operator advertises 70 acres, more than 15 miles of private ATV, UTV and hiking trails, permission to bring guests' own machines, and an approximate drive of 10 miles or 20 minutes to the canyon overlook 27. See the where-to-stay page for lodging comparisons and the ownership disclosure.

National Forest land along Highway 7 south of Jasper is in the Big Piney Ranger District 4,5. The Big Piney Motor Vehicle Use Map, dated March 25, 2026, identifies roads and trails open to particular vehicle types 4. A visible track or an unsigned road is not automatically a legal riding route, cross-country driving is prohibited, and wilderness areas are closed to all motor vehicles 4,5.

Beginning in April 2026, the Forest Service could no longer update its maps in the Avenza app; use the current PDF from its maps and guides page rather than relying on an older app copy 28.

Moccasin Gap and Brock Creek

Moccasin Gap is on the west side of Highway 7, 25 miles north of Russellville, with 28 miles of multi-use trails built mainly for horses 29. Only some sections permit OHVs 29. Its 17 camping spurs, $3 OHV pass per vehicle and $15 campsite charge were checked November 3, 2026 29. A heavy-rain-damage alert warned of possibly impassable areas on that date; the Big Piney District contact is 479-284-3150 30.

Brock Creek, near Jerusalem, is listed as free and year-round, checked November 3, 2026 31. Its current Forest Service page describes more than 42 miles of loops, while an older overview gives 37 miles 31. Use the MVUM to check vehicle eligibility instead of assuming every loop accommodates every machine 4,5.

Arkansas Act 922 and Newton County's road announcement

Arkansas Act 922, approved April 21, 2025, lets cities and county judges open eligible roads to UTVs measuring 80 inches wide or less and equipped with rollover protection 8. It does not make all UTVs street-legal throughout Arkansas 8. On designated roads, riders need a driver's license, registration with a decal, insurance, headlights, turn signals, a brake light and seatbelts 8. Roads posted above 55 mph, divided four-lane highways and state park roads cannot be opened under the act 8.

On December 5, 2025, the Newton County Sheriff announced that the county judge had opened county roads and state highways in unincorporated Newton County to qualifying UTVs 9. Ordinary ATVs are not included, and U.S. highways such as U.S. 65 are excluded 9. The signed county order and any Jasper city ordinance have not been located, so the announcement should not be read as permission for every stretch of Highway 7 or streets inside Jasper 8,9.

Riding responsibly

Keep private-property permission, National Forest route authorization and public-road eligibility separate: each rests on a different set of rules 4,5,7,8,9,15. Stay on routes authorized for your vehicle, respect the motor-vehicle prohibition in wilderness, and do not use a Buffalo River rental booking as permission to drive off-road in the national river 3,4,5,24. Check the Moccasin Gap damage alert before committing to that trail system 30. For days without a vehicle, the things-to-do guide covers hiking and river destinations.
