The Arkansas Grand Canyon landscape reflects stream erosion of the uplifted Boston Mountains, while the surrounding Buffalo River region has more than 11,000 years of human history 1,2,3,4. Newton County's settlement, Highway 7's development and the creation of Buffalo National River provide the later milestones 5,6,7,8. Bill Bowden's 2020 Arkansas Democrat-Gazette account credits Jane and Chris McNutt with promoting the tourism name in the early 1970s 9; the inn's published history places their ownership around 1968 to 1969, so the exact naming year remains unresolved 10.
