Where to Stay near the Arkansas Grand Canyon

Updated November 3, 2026 · Fact-checked November 3, 2026 · 49 sources · 7 min read

The Arkansas Grand Canyon area offers inns, cabins, whole-property rentals and campgrounds for a visit based around Scenic Highway 7, Jasper, Buffalo River access and nearby trailheads 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. From the Cliff House area, Jasper is about six road miles north, Pruitt about 11.6 road miles north and Alum Cove about 13 road miles away, making lodging here a base for several different kinds of outing 9,10,11,12. Morning fog in the valley is documented, although its frequency has not been measured 13,14,15. Buffalo National River was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2019, but that designation applies to the park, not the Highway 7 overlook or surrounding rental properties 16.

Bearly Earth Retreat is a private cabin property between Jasper and Pelsor near Highway 7, offered as one whole-property rental rather than separately rented cabins 3. The operator describes four bedrooms, sleeping space for ten guests and 70 acres with more than 15 miles of private ATV, UTV and hiking trails 3. Guests may bring their own machines for the property's trails 3.

The operator estimates the drive to the canyon overlook at about 10 miles and 20 minutes; this is an operator estimate, not a separately measured route 3. The property description and published distance were checked November 3, 2026 3. See the off-roading guide for the distinction between private-trail permission, National Forest riding and public-road UTV rules.

Comparing distance, lodging type and access

Most distances below are approximate road-mile estimates from the Cliff House area, based on published town mileages 8,9,17,18,19,20. Where that distance is not established, the listing retains its own location description rather than converting a mileage from Jasper into a precise mileage from the viewpoint 21,22,23,24,25. National river campsite distances are straight-line measurements and should not be treated as driving distances 4,26,27.

Listings and operating notes were checked November 3, 2026; a directory entry is not a guarantee that a business is open or has a vacancy on a particular day 7,8,22,28,29. Use the linked operator or agency information to confirm booking details, road conditions and facilities. The things-to-do guide provides the same distinction between road estimates and straight-line proximity for nearby destinations.

Inns, cabins and lodges by estimated road distance

Booking and operating notes in this table were checked November 3, 2026 1,2,7,8,19,29,30.

Lodging Approximate road distance Type and published notes
Cliff House Inn 0 miles Five rooms facing the canyon, sharing a lower deck; reached by 13 steps down, with no elevator; open for 2026 1,28
Lookout Mountain Cabins About 1 mile south Three separately bookable Cliff House cabins, Wolf, Bear and Eagle; face west toward Smith and Wayton mountains 2,31,32,33
Jasper Mountain Lodge About 2 to 3 miles Log cabin rental on three acres; Airbnb listing, with location provided after booking 30
Arkansas Grand Canyon View Cabins About 4.2 miles south Cabin complex at 9801 Highway 7; operator gives its location as 10.2 miles south of Jasper; current booking status not confirmed 19,20
Arkansas House About 6 miles north Lodging at 215 East Court Street, Jasper; Boardwalk Bistro temporarily closed 7
Sommer House Inn About 6 to 7 miles Four suites; whole lodge sleeps 16; events offered; active operator listing 29
Little Switzerland About 8.5 miles Cabins and mini-motel, 2.5 miles north of Jasper; listed as year-round 8

Cliff House rooms and Lookout Mountain cabins

The Cliff House Inn rooms and its separate Lookout Mountain cabins have different orientations and access arrangements 1,2. The five inn rooms face the canyon and share a lower deck, reached by 13 steps down without an elevator 1. Wolf Cabin sleeps four, Bear Cabin sleeps six and Eagle Cabin sleeps six; the cabins are about a mile south and face west toward Smith and Wayton mountains 2,31,32,33. These lodging details were checked November 3, 2026 1,2,31,32,33.

Staying in or north of Jasper

Arkansas House provides lodging at 215 East Court Street in Jasper, while Sommer House Inn advertises four suites and a whole-lodge capacity of 16 7,29. Little Switzerland combines cabins with a mini-motel 2.5 miles north of Jasper 8. Its year-round operation and the temporary closure of Arkansas House's Boardwalk Bistro were checked November 3, 2026 7,8. For restaurant alternatives, see food and shops.

Riverview is not included as an available motel: its motel is closed, although its canoe and kayak trips and shuttle services continue, checked November 3, 2026 34. That distinction matters when an older listing appears to offer both lodging and floats 34.

Other lodging without an established viewpoint distance

These businesses have published location information, but a driving distance from the Cliff House area has not been established 21,22,23,24,25,35,36. Their listing and booking notes were checked November 3, 2026 21,22,23,24,25,37,38,39.

Lodging Published location Type and verification note
J3 at the Gap 9494 Highway 7 South, Jasper Private retreat with five cabins that include side-by-side UTVs, tent and overland camping, and a full-property buyout 35,37,38
Gaston's View About 6.5 miles south of Jasper Canyon-view rental advertised through an Airbnb listing 21
Red Rock Retreat About 12 miles south of Jasper Two farm cabins; bookable operator listing 22
Deer Lodge Cabin Rentals 2257 NC 8800 Road, Jasper Cabin rentals with an apparently active operator website 23
Cowbell Cabins Mount Judea area Cabins documented by a directory listing only 24
Appleseed Cabin Near Deer Three-bedroom rental sleeping six; VRBO listing 25
Mack's Pines 22816 State Route 7 North, Dover, farther south Cabins, RV and tent camping, café, store and day-rider parking 39

J3's cabin packages include UTVs, but the retreat publishes conflicting statements about bringing personal vehicles 37,40,41,42. Anyone choosing it for riding should consult the J3 profile and policy cautions before making assumptions about their own machine.

Buffalo National River campgrounds

Buffalo National River charges no entrance fee, but campground fees vary by site 4,43. Every distance in the following table is straight-line distance from the Cliff House area; actual driving is farther 4,26,27. Prices and facilities were checked November 3, 2026, and the charges identified as seasonal are not presented as year-round rates 4,27.

Campground or camping area Straight-line distance Sites, published charges and access
Carver About 7.5 miles Eight walk-in sites; $16 a night in season; river access at the Big Creek and Buffalo confluence 4,26
Ozark Campground About 8.1 miles 30 sites; $20 a night in season; $25 pavilion 4
Erbie About 10.1 miles Individual sites $20 and group sites $50 in season 4
Kyles Landing About 10.1 miles 33 walk-in sites; high-clearance 4WD strongly recommended; no RVs 4
Steel Creek About 12.1 miles 26 tent sites and 14 horse sites; $20 in season 4
Mount Hersey About 12.5 miles Free primitive camping and river access; rough gravel road and no drinking water 27

Hasty is a national river landing without a developed campground 26. Woolum provides river access at Richland Creek, but road conditions and water crossings require checking; no distance from the viewpoint has been established 27.

National Forest camping and former campgrounds

The following distance labels are intentionally different: Sam's Throne is measured in a straight line, Richland Creek by estimated road distance via Pelsor, and Moccasin Gap by its published location relative to Russellville 44,45,46,47. Fees and access alerts were checked November 3, 2026 6,44,46,47,48,49.

Area Location or distance reference Camping notes
Sam's Throne About 8.1 miles in a straight line Free Forest Service camping, climbing and hiking on Judea Mountain; no drinking water 44
Richland Creek Recreation Area About 42 road miles via Pelsor 16 campsites at $10 a night; rough approach roads; bring water 45,46
Moccasin Gap West of Highway 7, 25 miles north of Russellville 17 camping spurs at $15; multi-use trail system with a heavy-rain-damage alert 47,48

Fairview, about 22 road miles south, is a former campground now identified as a free, year-round Ozark Highlands Trail trailhead, checked November 3, 2026 6. Rotary Ann, about 27 road miles south, is a day-use overlook with no camping allowed through December 31, 2026, checked November 3, 2026 49. Neither should be treated as an operating campground merely because older descriptions mention camping 6,49.
